Actor, Larry Lamb consulted Keith when playing a Medium in hit TV Series Taggart.

Keith Charles, has been dubbed ‘The Psychic Detective’ by many, so it seemed a fitting title for his book. He gained this name from his extensive work with police department who draft him in to use his divining skills to shed light on difficult cases. Keith has just returned form the US where he has been helping the Philadelphian police and Chatshow were lucky enough to track him down and give him a questioning. Apparently he knew we were coming, hee hee.

Keith started out in the police force. In Part 1 Jo asks him how his extra communication skills related to his police work. At a young age Keith didn’t know what a medium was but sensed that he had special abilities. He tells us about how he came to tell his superior on the police force about his ‘hobby’. And how his colleagues initially ribbed him but then came to him for advice!

Part 2: Keith has worked with many police departments using his psychic skills, including those in Australia, Japan, UK and Philadelphia, a trip which he’s just returned from. He tells us more about his travels and discusses how he deals with the sceptics while working on cases – he’s more than happy to be judged on his results! Keith acknowledges that psychics can’t solve crimes but can supply the police with more information to work from.

In Part 3 Jo asks Keith why the police are turning to psychics to gather information, particularly on murder cases. They discuss the tragic loss of Keith’s son Mathew and how he sometimes helps his dad when working with children. Although Keith obviously finds it very frustrating that he can’t hug Mathew, he’s glad he can feel his presence. Keith offers advice to people who become obsessed with contacting deceased loved ones and Jo exposes him to the cheesy dips!

THE PSYCHIC CHALLENGE - Channel 4 TV

A notable success was when Keith was selected by Channel Four TV as the medium most appropriate to go ‘head to head’ with renowned skeptic James Randi on live television. Randi met his match and thousands of viewers voted Keith a huge success when demonstrating his Mediumship live.  Mr. Randi to live up to his repeated assertion on the programme that if only adequate evidence of paranormality could be demonstrated to him, he would be happy to acknowledge it - and give the claimant the $1million prize he so publicly and consistently pledges. One minute interview with Keith:

What is a medium?

It's someone who communicates with the spirit of people who have passed over.

When did you realise you had the gift?

It first happened when I was a child from the age of around eight. I saw ghosts and had all sorts of vivid dreams, but I never thought there was anything wrong with it. It all seemed normal to me.

When did you realise that it wasn't?

When I was ten years old I pointed out the ghost of a little boy to a friend of mine who couldn't see it. That was when I realised that somehow I was different.

What do you say to people that don't believe in what you're doing?

I would say keep an open mind and you might be surprised. Particularly if you have lost someone close, you may find enormous comfort.

Do you get messages you don't understand?

All the time. I will say what I see or hear even if it means absolutely nothing to me. Once, during one of my shows, I had a spirit called Cyril come to me showing me a very big key. I didn't understand it at all, but I passed on the message to the person it was intended for. The lady just thanked me for the message and said no more at the time. After the show she came to me and explained who Cyril was. She said that he was a friend who always insisted that he didn't believe in the afterlife and promised that if there was one, he would come back and show her the key of life. That was her confirmation of the afterlife.

How do you help people by doing what you do?

Losing someone close and dear is a traumatic experience and it is often the apparent finality of it which hurts most. Things you might have said when they were alive, but didn't and now you never can. When you understand the spirit world you know that you can still communicate. On one private reading I told the man that he had asked his mother for help - not just in his mind, but out loud, and that she had received the message - he confirmed that unusually he had done just that a few days earlier and it gave him comfort to know that his mum had heard him.

Do you believe in good and evil?

I believe in right and wrong, yes. I believe in mischievous ghosts or spirits, but I don't believe in the devil. I think that if you believe in God there couldn't be a devil. The force of God is too strong to allow it. I think the devil was a fear factor created by religions to keep people scared and submissive.

Have you ever been scared by a ghost?

The first time I saw the ghost of my grandfather Charles, it shocked me, perhaps you may say scared me. There was no reason for me to be scared of him, because I loved him dearly and spent many days fishing with him. He was a good and kind man. I believe my shocked reaction to seeing him, was for my own benefit - that is I actually took notice and did not dismiss this marvellous sighting, as just one of those things.
